LACONIA — Eighth-grade students from Tiffany Dube’s Family and Consumer Science class at Laconia Middle School visited Lakes Region Community College to participate in an immersive Business Career Expo on Friday, Dec. 5. The event was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the professional world, offering students a firsthand look at the local business industry.

The centerpiece of the expo was a panel discussion featuring a diverse group of leaders from the Laconia business community. Students engaged in a question-and-answer session, asking panelists about their daily operations and seeking advice for their future careers.

The panel was asked to share their single best piece of advice for the students. The responses highlighted the value of community, mentorship, and adaptability:

•President of Meredith Village Savings Bank Marcus Weeks spoke on the importance of guidance, saying, “My best mentor in life pushed me to do more and had high expectations for me.”

•Kelly Dyer, an agent with New York Life, emphasized civic engagement, “Get involved in your community.”

•Shane Pouliot, owner of 603 Technology Solutions, encouraged curiosity, “Continue to be a lifelong learner.”

•Catherine Fuster, a teacher at Lakes Region Community College, offered reassurance regarding career uncertainty, “It’s OK if you don’t know what you want to do for a career.”

• President of Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce Karmen Gifford reminded students of the power of networking, noting, “Opportunities will come your way simply by getting to know the people in their community.”

Beyond the panel, the expo provided an interactive environment where students could meet and talk one-on-one with many local businesses from the area. To further broaden their horizons, the students were taken on a tour of the LRCC campus, giving them a glimpse of the various other programs and educational pathways offered by the college.

This event marks the beginning of a larger initiative. Students are scheduled to attend three additional Career Expos in 2026, which will focus on health sciences, culinary arts, and an all careers showcase.
