A Japanese weather satellite has captured a striking view of the Moon appearing beyond the curve of the Earth.
The image was shared by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University, which processes imagery from Himawari-9, a geostationary weather satellite operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

"Seen beyond the Earth's horizon from Himawari-9, the Moon peeks out to say hello," CIRA wrote in a post on X on Oct. 24.
Himawari-9 sits in geostationary orbit, keeping a fixed view over the same region of the Earth as it monitors weather systems. CIRA provides satellite imagery and processing tools used by scientists and the public to view data from the spacecraft.
