To The Daily Sun,
I write on the morning after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. I am, like so many of my countrymen and women, sickened by the act, and heartened that Mr. Trump survived the attempt. Like so many, I posted last evening, writing, “No. This is not the way. Voting is the way.”
Friends, Americans, countrymen and women, it is past time that we censor ourselves. Language of hatred spews forth from us thoughtlessly and often. Disgusting posts suggesting a “missed opportunity” or that “The Dems did it” not only do one another all-too-real and deadly harm, but they lead directly to this kind of act. The worse we say about one another, the easier it is to ignore the “other’s” humanity, and we get what we saw last evening. We know that “Civil War” is the deadliest act we can inflict on ourselves.
Language is where we must start. Each and every one of us: you, me, Crazy Uncle Steve and Grandma Nutty. If we do not begin to tone down our own rhetoric, if we do not begin to self-police our own words, we may well end up killing our own neighbors. There’s not much time left.
