To The Daily Sun,
Okay, my Republican N.H. friends — including Mr. Meade, Mr. Jenket, and Mr. Earle — I understand that you may not like Medicaid (or is it Medicare?) for all. I understand that. I am sure, you don’t want to forgive all present and future student debt. Do you think that all Amercian Jews are “disloyal” by not voting Republican? I understand that (even as a liberal Amercian Jew, I strongly disagree). Do you think that climate change isn’t man-made and that we should allow American civilians to own assault weapon? I don’t get that; but that’s not why I am writing this letter. Anyway, I think that E. Scott Cracraft has made more compelling, arguments on these topics in this paper in the past.
Now, do we want Donald Trump to stop Democratic elections? Do we want to prevent him from the possibility of cutting down most of the trees in New Hampshire and turning them into a profitable timber company? Do we want Walmart to turn into Trumpworld? I think you can agree with me when I write that we can’t let those events happen. So, the only way to guarantee that these scenarios won’t occur is for you to join thousands of your fellow Republicans and prevent Donald from being re-elected president of the United States of America in 2020.
During World War II, in England, George Orwell was seeing the possibility of Europe turning into a fascist state, similarly to the way I and many Americans see the situation in present day America under the Trump regime. Orwell’s book “1984” was written to “jolt“ European citizens to confront these totalitarian threats. My editorial has a similar purpose, to “jolt” you from re-electing Donald Trump. .
Now, your reaction may be, doesn’t Bernie Sanders have all of these “socialistic” ideas, ranging from free health care, to extreme taxes on the rich, policies that most of the other Democratic nominees endorse? Doesn’t he even call himself a Democratic socialist? If he or one the current Democratic nominees get elected president won’t America become a “communist” state?
I have my own views on which is worse for America, socialism or fascism, but only one American president (Trump) has used tariffs and threats to tell companies how and where they should operate. This seems like a socialist policy to me. Furthermore most American Democrats — Biden, Clinton, Bernie and Obama — have made a lot of money on our American capitalistic, democratic system. I don’t think they are that anxious to destroy it. Even if I believe in their policies to narrow our nation’s wealth gap, and make health care more affordable for all American citizens, (My wife is a nurse working in an assisted living facility and her employer will not give her health insurance — seriously.) they will not destroy this system if they become president, unlike the way that Trump is currently doing now as president.
Trump wants a totalitarian system to stay in power and to continue using the presidency to make money. If he is re-elected in 2020, he will have all the tools to succeed at this. He will continue to isolate America, to decrease all immigration, (legal and illegal) and to make it more and more difficult for Americans to vote. He could even declare an executive order that makes attending a Trump rally a requirement before an American citizen can register to vote. Similar arcane voting laws have been made before. For example, in the south, in the 1880s, a “poll tax” was created to discourage black citizens from voting.
If Trump is re-elected in 2020, I would predict that by 2022, he will have all the tools to implement these authoritarian policies. By then, he will have converted most of the federal judges and at least one or two more Supreme Court judges to his side. Even if Democrats were able to take over parts of Congress, he could still sign executive orders (as he is doing today) to prevent them from any sustainable oversight of any of his policies or his finances. In theory, he could even have the authority to make constitutional changes regarding America’s elections, so that he and his family (can you imagine President Eric Trump?) can stay in power and “rule America” into the near future.
Now, you may agree with many of Trump’s policies such as his anti-abortion policies, his policy of no additional background checks for gun owners and the continue lowering of corporate taxes (obviously you don’t care how high the federal debt rises, how anti- Republican is that idea). However, I hope you are aware that many of his policies are to made to solely enrich the Trump family. These include tweeting lies to increase the financial markets, as well as endorsing next year’s G-7 meeting at an American Trump resort, among others.
Most Republicans see that voting for Donald Trump should be an allowable “choice.” However I see it as similar to trying to stop a man from throwing a bomb into the United States Capital building. I would do everything in my power to prevent that from happening. I see a similar situation by coercing you not to vote for Donald trump in 2020.
So unless your last name is Trump, please vote for another Republican Primary candidate, such as Weld or Walsh or possibly the Democratic nominee in November 2020. Or, do what many Democratic Hillary haters did in 2016 and just not vote. But for all of the above reasons, please do not vote for this narcissistic man. .
For my Democratic peers, I believe that preventing Donald Trump from remaining as United States president should be our number one priority, in 2020, for the above reasons I presented to my Republican friends. Bernie or Warren cannot legislate their progressive ideas if Trump remains president.
