LACONIA — Laconia police officers conducting a welfare check Tuesday morning on South Main Street found a deceased man inside, according to the New Hampshire Department of Justice. Officers of the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit and the NH Attorney General’s Office are investigating the death as suspicious.

City police went to the multi-family home on the 200 block of South Main on April 14, to perform a welfare check.

The circumstances are under investigation, DOJ spokesperson Michael Garrity wrote in a media release, but there was no known threat to the public. The name of the deceased will be released following notifying next of kin, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was scheduling an autopsy.

Just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, about 15 minutes after Garrity’s release, two uniformed Laconia police officers, and one plainclothes officer, were on the lawn of the South Main property. One of the entryways was cordoned off with police tape, as were a wide driveway on the north side of the house, and a large yard on its south side.

Officers at the scene referred questions to Police Chief Matt Canfield, who didn’t immediately return inquiries.
