Patrick Lane: Budget bill is disaster for current and future generations

President Donald Trump’s new budget bill is terrible policy and a betrayal of what Trump and the GOP have claimed to stand for in the past. This bill will add at least $3.3 trillion (yes, that's right) to the national debt, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office. Trump and Republicans have, in the past, blocked spending on things like health care and child care under the premise that adding to the debt is immoral and unacceptable. Yet here they are, happily adding $3.3 trillion to the debt and shouting at and insulting any Americans with concerns.

This bill, as currently written, makes extreme cuts to Medicaid that will result in 12 million Americans losing their Medicaid and another 5 million losing their private insurance, also according to the nonpartisan CBO. Trump and Republicans swore to the American people that they would not cut Medicaid. Marjorie Taylor Greene shouted at Joe Biden during his State of the Union and called him a liar when he said that Republicans would cut Medicaid if they took power. This bill has shown Trump and the GOP to be shameless liars. 

The bill also raises the debt ceiling by $5 trillion. Republicans in the past have shut down the entire U.S. government and forced people to work without pay because they claimed to be so opposed to a debt ceiling increase. Here, they stick a $5 trillion increase in the bill without a second thought. Remember that when they scream about the debt ceiling at some point in the future when they are back in the minority. 

This bill raises the debt, kicks people off of health care, and closes rural hospitals while giving Trump’s corporate donors and country club friends an enormous tax break. It is a disaster for current and future generations.
