To The Daily Sun,

Our legislators are failing. Most were elected, regardless of party affiliation, promising that they sought to serve their district or community. Have they really read the NH Constitution? Do they understand the commitment to the common good including education and basic needs?

The State of NH is legally responsible to provide essential services and funding for education and should not be left to those who choose to vote on local school and town budgets each spring. Our elected officials have been ordered by the courts to find a more equitable solution to this funding problem.

Elected officials tout, “No new taxes. Not now, not ever!” are not offering a solution. Taxes are being passed down to us, the homeowners. Elected officials need to find tax relief for NH property owners before we all suffer.

Sustainable revenue solutions are available to our legislators if they would just do their jobs and start talking to one another.

I’m willing to pay for a fire department (but hope firefighters never show up at my house). I don’t have school aged children anymore, but I hope citizens in the communities where my grandchildren reside see them as community assets and not financial liabilities. That a permanent underclass of public servants who tend to our children, the elderly, plow our roads, and keep us safe for wages that won’t support them or their families is wrong.

Children need care so their parents can work. Families need food so they can exist. Families need affordable housing so they aren’t stressed about where they will sleep. Families need healthcare so we have a healthy community.

I hope we can elect those who will not shy away from complex problems. Seth Wheeler and Dean Cascadden are willing to look for common sense solutions instead of ignoring their Constitutional duty.
