John Walker: We all must resist turning the nation into Jack-boot, USA

The parallels to 1936 Germany are spine-tingling.

I have always loved this country and served it proudly for nearly 26 years in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Reserves. I almost do not recognize “us” these days. Somewhere, somehow, a huge rock was removed and Donald Trump and MAGA crawled out. Racists, all. White supremacists all, with a few Christian Nationalists sprinkled in for flavor. To me, a very bitter flavor.

I see ICE and other law-enforcement officers go well beyond what might be appropriate when apprehending suspected individuals. How did these folks go from being respected law enforcement to jack-booted? I honestly do not understand how this happens.

The narcissist-in-chief was duly elected, and I do not question that. What I do question, however, is how a deliberate system of three branches of government (read: checks and balances) can be so co-opted by one person. Last I checked, everyone in Congress and on the Supreme Court are human, and therefore have spines. Why is it they all, mostly, seem to have left their spines at the door? How does that happen?

Folks, we must push back. The direction this country is now headed will result in a country that will not prevail. I am writing so many letters because I am concerned, not only about me but most especially my grandchildren.

Let us not allow the authoritarian side to win. Democracy should rule. By that I mean we each have a voice, and it should be heard, and matter.

What to do, readers might ask? I write letters, my wife attends protests with homemade signs in hand. We pray out loud at our church. We must not surrender, even though we are stuck with this abomination of a president for 3.5 more years. I say, resist. Readers should go with a way to resist that suits them best.
