John Lamperti: 'Freedom’s holy light' will not shine brightly under GOP-run America

As schoolchildren so many years ago, we sang about “Our county ... sweet land of liberty” and “freedom’s holy light ...” We pledged allegiance to “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” I wholeheartedly believed all those things; that was the American way. I thought everyone agreed with that. Most did.

It is painful that today many Americans have rejected those goals. Today’s Republican Party has abandoned its own past ideals, and only seeks to get and keep authoritarian power. Its leader Donald Trump boasts about becoming a dictator when he gets back in power, and he already plans to once again deny electoral results he doesn’t like. He and his supporters are planning an imperial presidency that would reshape America and its role in the world.

The GOP’s plans for a second Trump presidency are not secret. Politico has reported “From nationwide abortion bans to classroom culture wars, assaults on climate science and political weaponization of the military, his return to the White House could make [Trump’s first term] seem tame.” Republican efforts to restrict voting will continue. “Freedom’s holy light” will not shine brightly in a new Trump/GOP-run America.

What should be done? For Americans who value liberty, there is only one choice: President Joe Biden must be reelected. We may disagree with him and some of his program (I do), but the Democrats respect and support democracy and freedom. If we hope to remain “The land of the free,” that has to be the way forward.
