Hatred and division are the new currency in America?

What? I read this opinion in The Daily Sun Nov. 12, and couldn’t believe what I was reading. Let me start by very much asserting that I am not a Donald Trump “supporter,” I don’t agree with who he is as a human. I also do not “support” Kamala Harris. She didn’t win a single primary. I haven’t felt there was any choice for quite a few election cycles. I guess I’m just done.

But to see the rhetoric Mr. Tom Washington tossed around, I was appalled. Don’t break bread with Trump supporters? Don’t hold doors? Don’t spend time with them? And on and on? It’s disgusting.

I think a lot of people, myself included, have been waiting for a candidate to run for the presidency that will bring us together as Americans. Not left, not right, but Americans. United we stand, divided we fall.

Maybe it’s time to accept the probability of that happening is pretty small.

Maybe it’s time to come together as a united people on our own. Trump won. I don’t like it. It is what has happened though. That’s just how it is, America spoke, and it’s OK to not agree with it. Resorting to vile behavior because some folks in the Trump column aren’t above it doesn’t prove anything. Being petty and treating people poorly for thinking differently than them is on them, that’s not Trump’s fault, that’s a choice they are making to “not break bread” with their neighbors. We cannot control the actions of others; we can only control our own.
