To The Daily Sun,

I attended the Belknap County Delegation meeting on Feb. 4, and appreciate the ongoing efforts to keep our taxes down. As a taxpayer, I value fiscal responsibility. However, I am deeply concerned about the significant cuts made to the Belknap County Extension Service.

Having witnessed firsthand the dedication of Mike Harris and the extension team, I know their work with the youth of Belknap County is invaluable. Their leadership and commitment make the extension service a wise investment for our community. My decision to volunteer on the extension’s Leadership Board and with the Belknap County 4-H Foundation Board stems from a desire to give back — not personal gain. In fact, neither I nor my family have participated in 4-H, but I have seen the positive impact these programs have on teens and families.

Funding 4-H is truly a vote for our future. Over the past year, I have watched teens develop maturity and confidence through public speaking competitions and seen the responsibility demonstrated by youth and families caring for animals at the fair. These experiences foster leadership, responsibility, and family collaboration—qualities that benefit our entire community.

I urge members of the Belknap County Delegation to attend a 4-H event in the coming year. Seeing these programs in action will help them appreciate the importance of supporting and funding the Extension and 4-H in next year’s county budget. Their decisions will ensure our youth continue to have access to opportunities that promote growth and leadership. Please consider the lasting impact your support will have on the future of Belknap County. It is a challenging time to be a teen. 4-H can make a difference.
