To The Daily Sun,

I was both shocked and saddened to read Tom Caldwell’s article in The Laconia Daily Sun on Saturday morning, citing the fact that Newfound teachers will be starting the 2026-27 school year without a contract. It appears to be the perfect storm of financial missteps, missed deadlines, failure to file the right forms and a clear lack of communication between all parties.

How does this happen?

The bigger question is this … How do we fix it?

In my opinion, as a community, we have a moral obligation to honor the contracts as negotiated and subsequently budgeted for. This unfortunate situation does not and should not land at the feet of the teachers  especially in a district where the pay scale is already notably below the New Hampshire state average.

It is imperative our focus should be on retention, not attrition. Offering boomerang contracts doesn’t go a long way to best serving “our” children.
