To the editor,

I would like to thank Mr. Cracraft for helping me make my point in his very predictable response to my editorial regarding same sex marriage. He evidently missed the entire point but that too is very predictable. He does however give us an interesting dissertation on the 2nd Amendment that deserves a good solid “C”. I actually applaud him because he did pretty well for a liberal. Critiquing his 2nd Amendment rant will have to be done another day because, as most of you regular readers know, that wasn’t the point to my editorial.

Mr. Cracraft’s response does however give me an excellent opportunity to use his own interpretation of the Constitution to further my point. According to his own words, he believes an individual’s right to bear arms isn’t absolute. Yet, he apparently believes the “right” to marry the person of your choice is absolute? If he believes the “right” to marry resides in the 9th Amendment then can’t it too have limitations like his own interpretation of an individual’s “right” to own a fire arm?

I may not be the genius Mr. Cracraft is but I do know it’s obvious that he and many others advocating for same sex marriage are simply unwilling to apply the Constitution consistently. If you want to push same sex marriage because you believe society has evolved to accept it then simply say so, at least I’d respect that. This is why I believe society should have a say in the form of a ballot initiative, now supported by the California courts.

For full disclosure, I don’t believe I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cracraft other than here in editorial pages of The Laconia Daily Sun. I’m sure he’s a nice guy and I certainly wish him no ill will. I hope that you readers find our banter entertaining because I know I do.
