Lady Justice’s sword has two edges – it cuts both ways

Do you recall the statue of Lady Justice, symbol of the power and strength of our justice system? She was not the invention of the U.S. Constitution, but a near universal depiction of equal justice under the laws of civilized nations for centuries. She wears a blindfold, to show that when a citizen stands accused of a crime, that the law will be applied fairly without regard to his station in life. Powerful or powerless, rich or poor, blind to race, religion or political affiliation, all are equal under the law of the land.

In one hand she carries the scales of justice, that weighs the evidence that is brought before the court. When the facts of the case are placed on the balance, guilt or innocence will be determined.

In the other hand she carries the sword of swift and righteous retribution, that symbolizes the consequences of the defendant's unlawful acts. This terrible blade has two cutting edges, to depict that the power and finality of the justice system cuts in both directions equally.

A while ago, I shared (over shared) how I believed that the Manchester court system had failed to provide any of those things to many people and I got hell for it. Since then, there has been a major shakeup there because over two thirds of all domestic violence cases had been dismissed for one reason or another. The "equal justice blindfold' had been cast aside, and someone had their finger on the balance.

Now let's shift our attention to larger issues. It has become fashionable for some angry people to openly call for the removal of President Trump by any means necessary. Tune in to almost any CNN or MSNBC "news" report, read any editorial in many major newspapers, the attacks against our lawfully and justly elected president are constant, unfounded, and very dangerous. We hear many very foolish people who would go so far as to change the U.S. Constitution so they can get rid of him. We are subjected to the naked hate for him and anyone who voted for him, from all sides, every single day. And they send their hateful messages to the rest of us every single day, often on these very pages in The Daily Sun. It's no secret who they are. Many of these same people claim the virtue of their public service in the military, government and elsewhere. They have forgotten their oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Remember Lady Justice! For when the blindfold is torn off, and the objectivity of the scales is tossed aside, all that remains is that terrible swift sword, and it cuts both ways.
