To The Daily Sun,

During difficult times of economic recession or depression, the right-wing lobby suddenly becomes very supportive of everyone's "freedoms". Despite the misery caused by an economic downturn, which they often caused, these reactionaries tell us that we should be fearful of any government efforts to alleviate the suffering or help the average citizen.

Happily, if we look at American history, we can see where these cynical efforts end up. In 1934, the largest corporations in the country led by DuPont, Standard Oil, and General Motors, openly formed an organization called The American Liberty League. Its main goal was to defeat President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and warn of "creeping socialism".

Cunningly, the League made sizable contributions to leading Democratic politicians so they would criticize Roosevelt's policies. Al Smith and John W. Davis, former Democratic candidates for president, and John Jacob Roskob, Democratic Party Chairman warned that Roosevelt was on the path to anarchy, as well as our loss of freedom. Luckily, the League began a rapid decline by 1936 when Roosevelt beat Alf Landon in a landslide, claiming, "the League wants to squeeze the worker dry in his old age and cast him like an orange rind into the refuse pail."

Today, we have the Koch brothers' Americans for Prosperity and the Tea Party, the heirs of the Liberty League.

How long before they all share the same fate?
