To the editor,
I read with interest the remarks by our city manager on the Wow Trail. I am amazed that the city is paying for a 'consultant' for the Colonial Theatre, but feels that the WOW trail should raise its own money to pay for an executive director. The WOW Trail IS all volunteer, all non-profit and is a AMENITY for the City. If someone does not support the WOW Trail they have a choice not to contribute.
The Colonial Theatre will be paid for with taxpayer funds and has already started the process to hire a consultant at $50,000 per year, approved by the City Council. The Colonial Theatre project will certainly "take additional city staff and resources" to get off the ground! More money could be spent on this then was spent on the Middle School project! The City of Laconia should not be a landlord, should not be in the real estate business, and should NOT burden the taxpayers with something that will NEVER reap any benefits!
Perhaps the city manager should put some energy into attracting some business to this city that will improve the tax base and also the unemployment situation. I am stunned, amazed, and concerned that this whole thing is not being questioned at all!
