To the editor,
Historically, Bayside Cemetery Association has allowed winter burials and access a one entrance as an accommodation to members of the Association (persons/families having purchased burial rights therein), restricted only when weather conditions prevail to the point of endangering the old roadways, monuments bordering thereon and also persons traveling therein.
Recently, a person (or persons) without any authorization for the Board of Directors has plowed or widened specific areas suitable to them. Bayside is under contract for plowing only certain roadways designated by the Board. Additionally, someone has plowed outside the main gate, blocking access to the ramp down to the tomb. Contrary to the opinion of others, it is used when family members do not desire a winter burial or if conditions reach a point where winter burial is prohibited (i.e. last winter).
Over abundance of snow accumulation last winter forced the closing of Bayside, as tombstones near the edge of the paved roadways became completely buried and obscured and further plowing could have caused extensive damage thereto. However, the barrier at the Main Gate was repeatedly driven through.
No unauthorized person is to drop a plow blade on Bayside Cemetery property. All vehicles entering must remain on paved, plowed roadways. Any further violations will necessitate, with deep regret by the Board, the necessity to close the one remaining entrance for visitors to grave-sites.
Winter burials will continue to be permitted as long as weather conditions permit.
