Professor Sandy is in one of his temper tantrum, chicken little modes over the Supreme Court decision to allow corporations to have “free speech” rights. Sandy believes that since there is some corporate corruption, then all corporations are corrupt. That is like saying some people are thieves, therefore all people steal. Or better yet, since there are some bigoted professors, it holds that all professors are bigoted. Take your pick.

The Supreme Court made the right decision. Corporations are legal entities, just as we the people are legal entities. They are essential to our way of life, as they provide the goods and services we consume and the jobs we have. They contribute to our welfare in countless ways . . . from contributing to our Social Security and Medicare, to our 401K’s or other retirement plans, and educations benefits. Corporations are the foundation of our tax base, through federal and state taxes on their profits, taxes they pay to local and state entities for real and personal property, and a host of other assessments and fees, and to the general tax base on the wages they pay to employees who are then taxed on those wages.. Those same corporations have lead the world in innovation in pharmaceuticals, medical technology, production methods, electronics, communications, etc. Take away corporations and say hello to third worldism.

I have encouraged the professor to seek counsel from some of his associates who teach business at the university. He acknowledge that they are nice people but he doesn’t seem to have listened to a word they may have said about real life. If he did, he would understand that corporations need to make a profit in order to continue to stay in business. They are highly unlikely endorse a candidate, if doing so would turn off about half of the population . . . because they know that half are also potential customers.

Professor Sandy teaches our children and is protected by tenure.
