BOSTON — Under the lights at Fenway Park on Tuesday, the Salem High School Advanced Chorus took to the field ahead of the 7 p.m. Red Sox game to perform the national anthem.

The Salem High School New Hampshire Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps presented the Color Guard.

Led by music teacher Dave Scheiber, 29 chorus students represented Salem on one of the biggest stages in sports. Dressed in navy Red Sox gear, many proudly bearing “Salem,” the group brought both talent and hometown pride.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our students,” Scheiber said. “They’ve sung at many events in our community, but to do it on a stage like this, in front of so many people, is something really special.”

This marked the school’s second Fenway performance and was part of the Red Sox’s outreach to student groups across New England.

After performing from centerfield, students stayed to watch the game against the New York Yankees.

In preparation, students worked through the unique challenges of a stadium performance, including practicing with simulated echo to help maintain focus and timing, Scheiber said.

“Holding your focus in front of 40,000 people is a skill in itself that they don’t really get to practice,” he said.

More than 300 members of the Salem community traveled to support the students, adding to the excitement of the night. For many performers, it was their first time on a stage of such a scale.

“I’m glad to say they’re all stronger singers and musicians than they were at the beginning of the year,” Scheiber said of his students.
