LACONIA — Construction of the roundabout at the junction of U.S. Route 3 and N.H. Route 11B at The Weirs is estimated to cost approximately $1.4-million, according to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, with the city's 10-percent share of the project amounting to some $140,000.

When the City Council meets tonight, councilors will be asked to apply the unexpended balance of $120,000 from general obligation bonds issued in 2009 to finance capital improvements and revaluation of property as well as to transfer $20,000 from the contingency account to fund the city's share of the project.

The council approved the project in October and engineering has begun in anticipation of starting construction in the spring. Work is expected to extend over two construction seasons in order to relocate utilities — gas, electric, telephone, cable, water and sewer — and to accommodate Motorcycle Week in June.
