BELMONT — Residents and business representatives are encouraged to participate in the second annual Snowman Building Contest hosted by Belmont Parks & Rec. The contest runs through Sunday, March 15.

“I started the snowman building contest as a way to engage the community in some outdoor winter fun,” wrote Danielle St. Onge, parks & rec director, in an email. “It’s just a fun, lighthearted way to enjoy the outdoors.”

There’s a theme to this year’s contest: New Hampshire Winter Games.

“This year’s theme, ‘Winter Games,’ was picked as a way to encourage families to celebrate winter recreation in NH,” she wrote. “I picture ‘skier snowmen’ and ‘sledding snow families.’”

It’s easy to enter the competition.

Start by building a snowman, or snow family, and taking some photos. Create a name and a brief description.

Submissions can be emailed to recreation@belmontnh.gov.

And while there’s plenty of white stuff to use for a snowman, St. Onge is hoping for more of the “sticky stuff.”

“Unfortunately, so far this year, although there is plenty of snow out there, it is not ideal ‘snowman-building snow.’ I am hopeful over the next few weeks we get a few good ‘sticky’ snow storms,” she wrote.

New this year is an online map that directs the curiously-minded to snowpeople around Belmont. The map allows participants to enter their snowperson publicly so others can see their masterpieces.

“To help make it more fun, I have added a Snowman Map for those that would like others to see their creations,” St. Onge wrote. See the map at tinyurl.com/BelmontSnow.

The Facebook page run by the Parks & Rec department will feature pictures of snowpeople submissions, so the community can be part of the friendly winter fun.
