Six hundred and sixty flags decorate the front lawn of Lakes Region Community College on Route 106 in Laconia on Veterans Day this year, representing the number of veterans who die by suicide each month. Humble Grunt Work, a Center Harbor-based nonprofit working to honor living and deceased veterans, laid the flags to raise awareness about the high rates of veteran suicide. According to HGW, 22 veterans die by suicide on average every day. The organization’s goal is to build transitional housing for service veterans, which is moving forward now that one fundraising goal was reached. They are looking for a suitable property in the Lakes Region, preferably Meredith. For a veteran or anyone struggling, mental help and support is available by calling 988 anytime.
