Honoring loyal partners

Lt. Evan Boulanger, K-9 handler with the Belmont Police Department, stands with Vito, a recently retired narcotics and search Belgian malinois. When Vito retired, the town of Belmont sold him to his longtime partner for just $1. Vito began his career at just 10 months old in 2014, and has worked with Boulanger ever since. "The bond that's formed during the working life," Boulanger said. "Imagine 40 hours a week, then he comes home with me, then call outs, I'm with him more than my family." On Thursday, the department installed a bench in honor of all K-9s that have served with the department, courtesy of local animal lover and writer Claire Hebert-Dow, outside the station. Hebert-Dow famously started the Bow Wow dog parade fundraiser on The WOW Trail. "This bench is just the beginning of what my plans are in supporting K-9s," Hebert-Dow said. "This bench seemed an appropriate means of thanking Evan and Vito over the course of the years." The bench will be formally dedicated Saturday during Belmont's Old Home Day celebration.
