GILFORD — Police totally shut down a section of Country Club Road near the Pheasant Ridge County Club last night amid indications that a home in the area may have been the scene of a untimely death and/or major crime.

An officer blocking the road near the intersection of Liberty Hill Road referred all questions to the Police Department, located within the Town Hall. Although it was well past business hours, the parking lot was nearly half-way filled with vehicles, including marked state police cruisers and many more unmarked but official-looking sport utility vehicles and Crown Victoria sedans.

Chief John Markland declined to answer questions. When asked if the state police's major crime unit — which is called in to investigate untimely deaths — was present in town or was en route, Markland referred all questions to the state attorney general's office and added he did not expect any public announcements about the matter to be made until Tuesday.
