The Tilton woman charged with her using her position as treasurer of the Laconia Elks Lodge to embezzle $21,971 has agreed to plead guilty in return for a jail term not to exceed nine months. Lola Blais has also agreed to make restitution for the money she stole between April 2005 and August 2006.
Blais, who has been free on $50,000 personal recognizance bail since she was arrested in February, was scheduled for trial on May 29. She will remain free on bail until her sentencing hearing, which will occur in 30 to 45 days.
In making the announcement yesterday, Belknap County Attorney Jim Carroll said the state takes it very seriously when crimes are committed by people who are put in positions of trust. He noted the fact Blais has no prior criminal record was a factor in reaching an acceptable sentencing agreement.
Under terms of the agreement, Blais will be sentenced to no more than 12 months in jail, with three months suspended and will remain on probation for another three years.
