A judge has released former Bartlett Police Chief Robert Snow from prison to allow him to care for his terminally ill wife in Massachusetts.
Snow was sentenced to five to 10 years after pleading guilty to stealing thousands of dollars of town money and reducing or withdrawing criminal charges against people if they donated to the police anti-drug and alcohol program. Prosecutors said Snow kept the money for himself.
Over the state's objections, Carroll County Superior Court Judge James O'Neill ordered Snow released last week. The judge ordered Snow must return to prison within 10 days of his wife's death and that he must appear for a court hearing in four months if he is not already back in custody. He also must report daily by telephone with a parole officer and may travel to Massachusetts only to care for his wife.
Snow began serving his sentence in March. He will be eligible for parole in March of 2006.
