The State Laboratory in Concord is performing an autopsy on the body of a man removed from the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee off Governor's Island around 11:00 a.m. yesterday morning. In a prepared statement, Police Chief Evans Juris said that "the incident remains under investigation pending the results of the autopsy." Authorities are withholding the man's identity until next of kin have been notified.
Workers at a residence on Edgewater Drive on Governor's Island reported what they thought was a body in the water near a private dock at 10:44 a.m. The Gilford Police Department, together with emergency personnel from the Gilford and Laconia Fire Departments, went to the scene. Finding the body some twenty feet off the dock, Gilford firefighters brought it ashore.
Officials of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, New Hampshire Marine Patrol, State Medical Examiner's Office and Belknap County Attorney's Office assisted at the scene.
