WEIRS BEACH — There have been no charges filed after police responded to The Big House around 1 a.m. Sunday morning after receiving reports that someone was shot in the head during the Wake The Lake event. Those reports were later determined to be incorrect.

Chief Matt Canfield said police do not believe anyone was shot, but there was an altercation there in the early hours of the morning. One person involved in the fight displayed a firearm and a round was fired.

Police are investigating the incident, Canfield said.

Officers on a nearby detail responded to the scene at the bar inside The Big House after an unidentified person allegedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and displayed it overhead before firing a round into the floor.

Police reported witnessing a chaotic scene with many patrons fleeing the building after hearing a gunshot.

Initial calls to first responders indicated there may have been an active shooting or that a bomb had gone off, both of which turned out to be false, Canfield said Monday.

Police are not sure if the fight, which may be connected to the fired round, occurred before or after the gun was discharged into the floor.

In the ensuing chaos, police found a man who had sustained a serious head injury near the Weathervane Seafood Restaurant. That individual was transported to Concord Hospital-Laconia and released in stable condition after receiving treatment. Police are not sure if his injury is related to the altercation.

The bar was shut down immediately following the incident and officers began an investigation, Canfield said. It was too early to tell if officers expected to file any charges in the incident.

Officers on Monday were working to obtain and review surveillance and cell phone footage of the incident. Anyone with details regarding the fight or the fired shot are encouraged to contact the Laconia Police Department through Tip 411, an anonymous tip line, by sending a text message containing the words LACONIA and Tip to 847411.
