ASHLAND — A Meredith driver was charged by State Police after driving the wrong direction along Interstate 93 on Wednesday evening.
William Heffron Jr., 55, is charged with nine counts of felony reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated driving under the influence, and one count of reckless conduct.
State Troopers assigned to the F barracks received multiple calls about a vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-93 at 9:35 p.m. Wednesday.
Troopers located the vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla, as Heffron allegedly continued traveling at a high rate of speed southward in the northbound lanes through Ashland.
To prevent further danger to the public, troopers formed a rolling roadblock farther south to stop traffic on the interstate.
Heffron then halted the vehicle in front of troopers and was apprehended.
While investigating Heffron on the roadside, troopers observed him displaying signs of impairment, according to a State Police press release. They discovered he was wanted on a warrant issued by the Laconia Police Department.
He’s being held on preventive detention at the Grafton County jail.
Troopers were assisted by members of the Ashland and the Holderness police department. The case remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper David Carlson at 603-223-3787.
