Just over two months after Platonic aired its Season 2 finale, Apple TV revealed its fate. Fans have been itching for more from this beloved comedy series, and it is now confirmed to be returning for a third season.
Season 2 certainly left the door open for more story to tell between longtime besties Will (Seth Rogen) and Sylvia (Rose Byrne), who reconnected in the first season of the show after a years-long rift. In the Season 2 finale, Rose decided to help Will open his “S**tty Little Bar” by going into business with him as a loophole after he was hit with a non-compete clause from his former employer. Considering Rose and Will’s history, this may only spell disaster.
Rogen agreed, telling TV Insider, “I think it will have a negative impact on their friendship.” Now, we’ll be able to see whether this prediction is correct. Scroll down for everything we know about Season 3 of Platonic.
Will Platonic return for Season 3?
Yes, Apple TV confirmed on December 5 that Platonic will be returning for Season 3. This matches up with Season 2’s renewal announcement, which came in December 2023 (although that one was a much longer wait, as it came five months after the conclusion of the first season).
“We couldn’t be more excited to get back into the world of Platonic with our amazing partners, Rose and Seth, and Sony and Apple” cocreators Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco said.
When will Platonic Season 3 premiere?
A premiere date is not known at this time. Seasons 1 and 2 came out more than two years apart, and Season 2 didn’t premiere until August 25, more than a year after the Season 1 finale.
If that trajectory is followed again, we may not get new episodes of Platonic until 2027.
Who is in the Platonic Season 3 cast?
Byrne and Rogen will be returning as Sylvia and Will. Other series regulars from Seasons 1 and 2 are Sylvia’s husband Charlie (Luke MacFarlane) and her best friend Katie (Carla Gallo), although their casting has not been confirmed yet.
“I’d love to [return],” Byrne told TV Insider. “They had great ideas for Season 2, and I feel like that could come to life for another one. The characters are really fun, they’re dynamic, it’s really funny and dysfunctional, so it’s up to the powers that be.”
Rogen agreed, telling Decider, “I would love to keep doing Platonic. I think there are really great storylines for the season. And it’s something I would love to keep doing as long as people enjoy watching it.”
Platonic was originally conceived as an anthology series by creators Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco. Their initial plan was only to feature Byrne and Rogen for one season, with future seasons exploring new casts and characters. However, the plans shifted amid production for Season 1.
“They have such amazing chemistry together, and it was such a great experience, that we decided to ask them if they would be open to doing more, and they said yes,” Stoller told The Hollywood Reporter. “And Apple, rightly so, felt like they were the show’s identity. I remember they said, ‘Who is going to want to watch a Season 2 without them?’”
Is there a Platonic Season 3 trailer?
No, production has not begun on Season 3 yet, so there is no footage for a trailer at this time.
