House of the Dragon Season 4 is official. Series co-creator Ryan Condal had previously confirmed that his Game of Thrones spinoff would be four seasons total. Now, HBO has announced the official Season 4 renewal, but it hasn’t confirmed that Season 4 will be its last. What is official, however, is when House of the Dragon Season 4 will premiere. Season 3 comes out in summer 2026.

HBO announced the drama’s renewal and premiere year during the HBO and HBO Max slate presentation, hosted by Casey Bloys, on Thursday, November 20, in New York City. The network has also renewed its newest Game of Thrones spinoffA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, for Season 2 ahead of its series premiere on Sunday, January 18.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe,” Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a statement. “Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R.R. Martin‘s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have captured so beautifully. And this summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”

Here’s everything we know so far about House of the Dragon Season 4.

Is House of the Dragon renewed?

House of the Dragon is renewed for Seasons 3 and 4.

Is House of the Dragon ending with Season 4?

Season 4 will reportedly be its last, but that’s not confirmed by HBO. Condal said in August 2024, after the Season 2 finale, that he intends for the show to be four seasons long, per Deadline.

When does House of the Dragon Season 4 come out?

House of the Dragon Season 4 will premiere in 2028, HBO announced on November 20. Season 3 filming took place from March to October 2025. There’s no word on when Season 4 starts filming.

What is House of the Dragon about?

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen. Season 3 cast includes Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.

After Season 2 ended on the cusp of a major battle from Fire & Blood, the Battle of the Gullet, Season 3 will begin with that game-changing skirmish fought in the air and at sea. Condal explained why they didn’t get to it in Season 2 in an August 2024 press conference.

“We were trying to give the Gullet, which is arguably the most anticipated — well, I would say maybe the second-most-anticipated action event of Fire & Blood, trying to give it the time and the space that it deserves,” Condal told journalists, per Variety. “Obviously, as anybody that’s seen the finale, we’re building to that event. That event will happen very shortly in terms of the storytelling of House of the Dragon. Based on what we know now, it should be the biggest thing to date that we’ve pulled off, and we just wanted to have the time, the space to do that at a level that is going to excite and satisfy the fans and in the way it’s deserved.”

The Battle of the Gullet will put Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) army up against Aemond’s (Ewan Mitchell). Aegon (Glynn-Carney) escaped King’s Landing in secret with Larys (Matthew Needham) in the Season 2 finale, pursuant to the book plot, setting him up for a potential return down the line. Rhaenyra and Daemon (Smith) reconciled by the end of the season as well, with Daemon committing himself to Rhaenyra as queen after his supernatural and foreboding experiences at Harrenhal.

The season ended with Alicent (Cooke) secretly meeting Rhaenyra at Dragonstone and giving her consent for her son Aemond to be killed. His coup of the throne ended as a result. Alicent also asked Rhaenyra to flee with her and her daughter Helaena (Saban), which Rhaenyra rejected. Whether she wanted to leave with her or not, Rhaenyra’s hands were tied to the war that Alicent’s actions triggered at the end of Season 1 when she undid Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) line of succession by crowning Aegon.

If you know the book plot, you know that things only get more deadly from here. If you don’t know the book but are familiar with Game of Thrones, you know that violence is always on the horizon in this franchise.
