All throughout Dexter: Resurrection‘s first season, the mystery of who the New York Ripper is loomed large, spawning various fan theories about the identity of the man who once terrorized the Big Apple so. Now, the Dexter spinoff is ready to answer that question, as a TV legend has been chosen to occupy the role.
According to Deadline, Succession star Brian Cox will star as the New York Ripper, an infamous serial killer who went underground. He was actively pursued by Claudette Wallace (Kadia Saraf) in Season 1 after tormenting the families of his victims with graphic details of his slayings.
Dexter (Michael C. Hall) discovered the name of the Ripper in the vault belonging to Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), as one of the killer files he snapped bore the name, “Don Framt, New York Ripper.” Dexter also found the signature weapon of the killer, a rod with a hook at the end of it, in Prater’s collection.
In a newspaper clipping shown in the series, it was revealed that the New York Ripper continued to torture his victims’ families with “eerie phone calls that target old wounds and stir up long-buried fears.”
Dexter: Resurrection is expected to pick up after the events of Season 1, with Dexter snagging a pile of files on active serial killers who’d been in the nefarious club with the obsessive Prater, who died.
The New York Ripper’s identity was but one of several burning questions left open by the finale. Another was what will happen to Al a.k.a. Rapunzel (Eric Stonestreet), who managed to escape New York before Dexter could get him on his table. He was the only one of Prater’s active club members who got away from Dexter. Still to be determined are the identities of the other killers whose files Dexter took from the vault: Midnight Mangler, Jawsplitter, Sleepy Eyed Stranger, and the Yonkers Slayer.
