Abby Phillip fired back at Scott Jennings with one simple question on Tuesday’s (March 31) edition of CNN NewsNight as the panel discussed President Trump‘s war with Iran.
During the discussion, Jennings repeated Trump’s latest talking points, including claims that Iran was “not even shooting at us.” The conservative commentator repeated these claims on air, saying that Iran has “nothing to shoot” at the U.S.
“But you would admit Iran is in a much weaker position today. I mean, we’ve bombed 13,000 military targets,” Jennings said on Tuesday’s show, per Mediaite. “And we’ve taken away, last night, you know, their underground missile stores in Isfahan.”
He continued, “I mean, we control the skies. We’re refueling B52s over their airspace. They’re in a much weaker position. So when it comes to talking, whether they’re reasonable or accessible or whatever, I know this: they’ve got really nothing to shoot back at us with right now. And that’s a weak position.”
Phillip responded to Jennings’ claims with one specific question, asking that if it’s true that Iran is in such a weak position with no means to shoot back, “Why is the Strait of Hormuz closed then? If that’s the case.”
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the busiest oil shipping channels, with about 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passing through the strait. Since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran in February, the country has effectively blocked the channel, sending gas prices worldwide soaring.
Jennings did not reply to Phillip’s question, as another panelist chimed in.
Trump is set to address the nation tonight, Wednesday, April 1, at 9 pm ET, with an “important update” on the Iran war. The specific details of the president’s speech are unclear, but Jennings detailed what Trump needs to address to assure the American public.
“He’s going to have to lay out military stuff, but also talk to the country about who he’s talking to, what they’re telling him, and what a post-military-action scenario looks like here,” Jennings said. “That has to include some conversation about the Strait of Hormuz.”
