High School Softball:

Eagles grounded by Mountaineers

One of the top teams in DIII gave Gilford their second loss of the season bringing their record to 5-2. Berlin is the only team to shut out the Golden Eagles this season. Berlin loaded the bases in the 3rd inning on a single, walk and error which set the stage for Emily Picard’s grand slam which accounted for all the scoring.

The Gilford pitching staff of Colby Butterfield and Ella Harris held Berlin to only 4 hits and struck out 10. Coach Joan Forge after the game recognized some great plays. “Samantha Knowles played outstanding defense at second base turning a double play and also making a diving stop and throwing out a runner from her knees.” Gilford’s two hits came from Alexis Lacroix and Ella Harris

Middle-inning mistakes cost Raiders

The Belmont Raiders lost to Berlin 9-4 in a slug fest that include 5 home runs. The Mountaineers scored all their runs off of 3 long balls. Morgan Hall pitched 6 innings allowing 10 hits, 2 walks, 7 K’s and 1 hit batter. Belmont had home runs by Julianna Estremera and Jordan Lavallee. Makenzie Donovan and Jordan Sargent each went 2-4. According to Coach Clary the homers were not the only problem. “We had some mistakes in the third and fourth inning allowed Berlin to score all their runs and they proved to be very costly.”

Freshman shortstop shines for Sachems

The Laconia Sachems are a resilient bunch, coming back from an embarrassing 16-0 shutout to win a tough 7-4 win over Inter-Lakes. Starting shortstop Bianc Russo broke her leg last week and freshman Jillian Gagnon stepped up big, according to Coach Monique Swormstedt. “We didn’t know she was going to play until game time and she played awesome! She made 6 really good plays in her first time at short.”

Courtney Trupin was stellar again behind the plate while Dani Friend pitched a complete game and hit her spots to keep the Lakers off balance. Nyla Dean had 2 hits to spark the offense.

Swormstedt noted a key play in the game. “Kayla Morrill made a great double play at third to kill a potential rally and keep them off the board.”

Panthers collect 7th win

Moultonborough Academy Panthers softball team traveled to Gorham and recorded their 7th win of the season with a 10-2 victory. Lauren Shipp led the way offensively going 3-4, while Carlee Morgan, Alexa Price, and Abi Iverson chipping in with two hits apiece. Savannah Keyes and Allie Taylor combined to give up just 3 hits. Keyes went 4 innings recording 5 k's and no walks, while Taylor finished up the last three innings recording 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

High School Baseball:

For the Bears, Michael Allard had a nice day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with 2 RBI. Jack Beaulieu also had two hits with an RBI and Devan Glover pitched 3.1 innings of solid relief. Winnisquam is 3-6 on the season

Sachems don't go quietly

There is some life in the Sachems but the comeback against John Stark fell short. Trailing by eight entering the 6th and on the verge of being shut out, Laconia pounded out 5 hits and 6 runs to close the gap but fell 8-6 to the Generals.

Freshman Logan Dee hit his spots and gave the Sachems 4.2 innings of solid pitching, giving up 4 runs with 4 strikeouts. Brad Weeks went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI to pace the offense while Cam Haynes drove in 3. Laconia struggled at the plate striking out 12 times and left 9 men on base. The Sachems drop to 2-5 on the season as make-up games now begin to pile up with back-to-back games.

Belmont batters Berlin

Griffin Embree got the win for Belmont as he threw 3 innings giving up just 1 hit, 1 walk with 7 strikeouts against Berlin. Brett Lima finished up 2 innings, 1 hit, 1 K and was hot at the plate going 2-4 with a stolen base and 4 RBI. Colby Brown went 2-4 with a walk, 2 RBI and 4 stolen bases. Brett Auclair also went 2-2 scoring twice. The Red Raiders move to 6-1 on the season.

Sachem girls find a way against Plymouth

Without three of their top players, the Sachem girls willed their way to a victory over Plymouth and bounced back from that devastating 14-13 overtime loss to Kearsarge.

As Coach Bob Howe said, it wasn’t pretty. “Total team effort as we were missing 3 starters and Plymouth was up to the challenge and never backed down from a 6 goal deficit to pull within 2 before we won the draw and held on to the ball for the final 2 minutes to secure a 13-11 victory.”

Laconia had a 6-4 halftime lead, then built the lead to 6 in the second half before Plymouth mounted a spirited comeback. Leading the way was Becca Howe with 9 goals an assist and 6 draw controls. Caitlyn Beattie scored twice while Sydney Stevens and Sophie George each tickled the twine once. Stevens also added 3 assists.

Eagles outpaced by Bow

Another Step back for Coach Dave Rogacki and the Golden Eagle girls, who lost to Bow 14-9. “Playing our third game in as many days we just didn't adjust to Bow's style of play. After being down by only one at the half we couldn't stay with Bow's quality pace of play.” Shelby Cole had 4 goals while Laurel Normandin had two and Sophie Leggett, Taryn Fountain, Makenize Newman each had one.

Sachems survive scare from Kearsarge

The Sachem boys got a wake-up call by the Cougars! Kearsarge came into the game with a 1-7 record and decisive defeats on their resume so Laconia promptly came out and laid an egg in the first half, finding themselves down 6-3 against a very hungry, upset-minded team.

After some words of “encouragement” by the coaching staff at the half, the boys got their focus realigned and outscored the Cougars 9-1 to take the match 12-7. The Sachems are 7-0 but tough matches this week against Hopkinton (Can be heard live on WEMJ today at 4 p.m.) and Plymouth will be their toughest of the season.

Laker boys surging

Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough boys pull a big win at Campbell, 11-6, behind Brendyn Marsh’s 3 goals, Liam Brown netted 3 with a helper and Tom DeTolla had 6 points on the day. Don’t look now but the young Lakers are 4-2 on the season and primed for a playoff push.

MA girls dispatch Gilford

The Panthers continue a strong showing, defeating the Golden Eagles 7-2. #1 Megan Colby topped Reagan McIntyre while Gilford’s #2 Sarah Fillion got the best of Jess Lear. Moultonborough swept 3-6, capturing the match before doubles with Megan Swedberg, Aubry Smart, Maddie Burns and Maddie Colby easily winning their matches.

Make that 7 wins for the Gilford boys

Gilford boys ran their winning streak to 7 with a 7-2 shellacking of the Panthers. Christian Workman continues his strong season, beating Tim Lahey 8-1, Tylan Hant, Mikey Eisenmass, Colton Workman, Donny Searse and Brendan Birgman also won their matches for a 6-0 lead heading into doubles. Moultonborough’s wins came at #2 and #3 doubles of Devin Rooney-Myles Currier and Stephen Wood-Patrick Finnegan.

Kingswood competitive in loss

Kingswood's Russell Lucia prevailed 8-6 in singles and teamed with Chase Bailey for an 8-5 doubles win, but Kingswood fell to Oyster River, 7-2. Bailey also played well in his singles match. Arhus Babcock and Noah Shatzer nearly pulled out a win at second doubles but lost 9-7.

Following that match later in the week Kingswood got shut out by Portsmouth 9-0 but Coach Steve Langevin saw some good things from his squad. “Russell Lucia, Chase Bailey and Preston Bechard competed well in their singles matches.” The Knights returned to action Monday at Trinity.

Lakers, Timberwolves girls trade matches

Dodging showers and storms, the Inter-Lakes girls managed to complete two matches in a double header against Prospect Mountain at Prospect Mountain. Each team took one match. First match, PMHS defeats I-LHS 5-4 with the Lakers taking 4 of the singles including Alyssa Floyd, Gabrielle Nedeau, Phoebe Hoag and Ella St.Cyr earning easy wins. But the Timberwolves roared back and swept the doubles to capture the match.

It was a different story in the second match as the Lakers again won 4 of the singles matches and the sole doubles match, earning a 5-2 victory and split the doubleheader. Ava Duymazlar avenged her loss in the first match, cruising to victory in the second.

The Lakers get the Sweep.

In the first match of a double-header between Prospect Mountain and Inter-Lakes boys, it went to doubles all tied up at 3. Nate Sullivan, Same Noe and Simon Bird earned wins for the Lakers while the Timberwolves' Randy Dyer, Aiden Gehly and Tyler Bradbury evened things up.

Inter-Lakes took 2 doubles matches for the hard-fought 5-4 win. In the second match the weather shortened the match as the Lakers took the drama out of it early, winning 5 of the 6 singles matches to take the decision 5-1 and no doubles were played. The win moves the Lakers to 6-2 on the season while Prospect Mountain drops to 1-5.
