Gilford headed to Newport on Saturday for the second time this season and came home with the same result, a loss. The Golden Eagles fell to Newport 38-22 in the DIII North Conference finals, ending the season 8-2. Penalties hurt Gilford throughout the game but were especially painful when flags caused two touchdowns to be called back. The Golden Eagles committed 13 penalties for 122 yards total, five of which were personal fouls.

Senior Max Troiano led the offense with 148 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Carter Mercer threw for 242 yards on 15 completions with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Both of the Golden Eagle losses this year came in Newport. Gilford had the second seed in the North Conference with a 7-1 record. The Golden Eagles advanced to the conference championship game by beating Inter-Lakes-Moultonborough 28-13 the week prior. The Lakers had knocked Gilford out in the first round of the postseason last year.
