Virginia "Jean" Stephens, 90

MEREDITH — Virginia "Jean" Holmes Stephens, 90, of Meredith, went to be with her Lord peacefully and surrounded by family on July 8, 2017.

Jean was born to William and Caroline (Schweickert) Holmes on Oct. 12, 1926, in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Jean was a vital member of the Meredith community from her arrival in 1970 through the present and will be remembered for her generous service to others. She was a very welcoming presence at Meredith Bank, St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, and a proud resident of the Meredith Bay Colony Club. Additionally, she spent many years as a devoted volunteer of Lakes Region General Hospital, Altrusa, and the Visiting Nurses Association, as well as serving Holy Communion to the homebound with her special friend, Martha.

Jean was an avid knitter, enjoyed playing bridge and completing jigsaw puzzles, and was passionate about Boston sports.

Jean’s greatest joys, accomplishments, and legacy live on in her five children, 17 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren (with another on the way). Everyone always looked forward to visits and phone calls with her. She was so loving and kind. “Mom” and “Grams” was an outstanding mentor as she instilled a sense of service in her family. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure to meet her, but her legacy of service to others stands as a tribute to the beautiful woman that she was.

Jean was married to Theodore Stephens Sr. in 1948 and is survived by their five children, Ted Jr. (Jackie) of Southport, North Carolina, Robert (Mary Helen) of Moultonborough, Rick (April) of Center Harbor, Joan of Moultonborough, and Linda (Art) of Groveton; along with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her daughter, Patty; and her sisters, Carol and Peggy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, 186 Waukewan St., Meredith, NH 03253. All are encouraged to serve others in kindness as a memorial to Jean.
