TILTON — Ruth Brown Smith, 99, a longtime resident of High Street in Tilton, died March 4, 2006 at The Arches in Northfield. She was born in Anthens, Maine on May 26, 1906, daughter of Eugene and Lottie (Poland) Brown. She spent her youth and schooled in Harmony, Maine. Ruth moved from Harmony to Tilton in 1935.
She was a longtime stitcher before retiring from the former Arthur S. Brown Leather Belt Company in Tilton in the 1980s. In November of 2005 Ruth was presented with the Boston Post Cane, honoring her as the oldest resident of Tilton. She was an active member of the Northfield-Tilton Congregational Church in Tilton and member of the Ladies Circle there. She was a member of the Granite Hill Rebekah Lodge # 32 in Northfield, Morning Star of Tilton and the Grange in Harmony, Maine. Ruth enjoyed her travels to the ocean with family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Smith; by a brother, Ralph Brown; and by her niece Sylvia Amalfitano. Her family includes, two grand nephews, Michael Amalfitano of Florida and Joseph Amalfitano of Maine.
According to Ruth’s wishes there are no calling hours. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 8, at 1:00 p.m. at the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Tilton.
