Rosemarie G. Hughes-Smith, 71

Rosemarie Gladys Hughes-Smith, 71, passed away peacefully in her sleep following a long battle with cancer, on July 11, 2026.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene W. Smith; sons Sean and Patrick McNamara; her mother, Margot Hughes; brothers Steve (Jan) and Kendall (Kathy) Hughes; an aunt and an uncle, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Seth D. McNamara, ex-husband Francis McNamara, father Richard K. Hughes, grandparents Polly and Gladys Hughes and Fritz and Maria Wiegand.

Rosie loved to learn. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1972, from NHTI Concord’s Community College in 2012, with an associate’s degree in human service, from Granite State College in 2014, with a bachelor of psychology degree, and with a master’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University in psychology in 2017. She became a member of the National Honor Society at Ashland High School. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa at NHTI. She graduated summa cum laude from Granite State College. She became a member of the National Leaders of America during her time at SNHU.

She found that education was what she enjoyed the most. Following her education at NHTI Concord’s Community College she went back to the college and worked with ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages). Being able to help students work through issues with language gave her great pride and pleasure. She found it particularly rewarding when she helped students from other countries celebrate their heritage. The highlight of the college year for ESOL students was sharing their clothing, foods, talents, and displays from their native countries during the multi-cultural festival.

She was secretary and a member of the board of directors of the Granite State Chapter Antique Truck Club of America for many years. Her love of trucks started when she and her first husband, Fran McNamara, owned and operated heavy equipment. They traveled to many states showcasing the attractions each state had to offer.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, in the Green Grove Cemetery, 149 Main St. in Ashland.
