Rolland C. Hawkins, 78, of North Road in Gilmanton Iron Works, died June 1, 2007 at Concord Hospital.

Born at the Hawkins Homestead in Lower Gilmanton, son of the late Shurldin and Amy (Osborne) Hawkins, he was a lifelong resident of Gilmanton.

Prior to retirement, he had worked as an automobile mechanic at Nelson’s Garage in Gilmanton Iron Works and at Freese Brothers in Pittsfield. He also had been employed as a truck driver with the Pittsfield Box Company.

He had served his community as a Deputy Chief for the Gilmanton Iron Works Fire Department and also had served as Police Chief for the Town of Gilmanton.

Rolland loved hunting and fishing, he also enjoyed helping friends make maple syrup.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years: Helen (Eldridge) Hawkins of Gilmanton Iron Works, three children: Carl R. Hawkins of Laconia, Heather D. Young of Belmont and Jeffrey A. Hawkins of Chichester, nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter, a sister: Geraldine Mackes of Florida, also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife: Margaret (Gagnon) Hawkins, a brother: Charles Hawkins and two sisters: Lucille Gilman and Irene Hawkins.

Calling hours are Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, 12 School Street in Alton. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 5, at 1 p.m. at Lower Gilmanton Community Baptist Church on Route 107 in Gilmanton, with Rev. Linda B. Bolton, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery in Gilmanton Iron Works.
