GILMANTON — Robert “Bob” George Egbert Jr., 80, of Bingham Road, passed away on May 3, 2024, at Concord Hospital-Concord after a long illness.

Bob was born in Pocatello, Idaho, the son of George and Carmen (Crofts) Egbert, and the oldest of nine children. He loved to tell stories about growing up with his brothers and sisters and all the mischief they made together and his time in the National Guard with his brother, Mike, and their shenanigans. He was quick to laugh and to tell a good (and bad) joke.

Bob worked on the Union Pacific Railroad while obtaining his doctorate in political science at Idaho State University and began his teaching career first at ISU, and then at San Diego State University. In 1980, he moved to New Hampshire after obtaining a position to teach political science at Plymouth State University and remained there teaching until he retired in 2021. There, he met his soulmate, Kathy, to whom he was married for 41 years.

The most important thing in his life was his family. He found great joy in raising daughters, Lauren and Kaitlin, and the activities the family did together: traveling out west, visiting national parks, swimming, fishing, camping, theater and family traditions — including pumpkin carving and Easter egg hunts. Second to his family was the Mormon Church, to which he devoted much time and energy attending services, teaching Sunday School, visiting families, and helping wherever he was needed.

Those who knew Bob, know what a kind, generous and deeply good man he was.

A memorial service will be held on May 11 at 1 p.m. at the Jesus Christ Church of Latter-Day Saints, 1242 Old N. Main St., Laconia.

Bob spent many years on the board of the American Civil Liberties Union supporting causes that were very important to him. Memorial donations in Bob’s name can be made to the American Civil Liberties Union.
