NORTHFIELD — Lawrence L. Ryan, 94, a longtime resident of Oak Hill Road in Northfield died, Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen following a period of failing health. He was born in Mineola, Long Island, New York, June 17, 1914, son of Leo and Olia (LaMotte) Ryan. He attended Hofstra College in New York City following graduation. He and his wife moved from Rensselaer, NY to Northfield in 1980. He was employed for several years as an accountant and worked in the insurance field in New York. For many years he worked in the auto parts industry and for over 28 years worked with Albany Dodge, Albany, NY. He was a former member of the 55+ Club in Tilton and was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Tilton. Lawrence was “a man of great virtue, character and wit”. Mr. Ryan had a passion for history and had great interest in the Native American Culture and associated collectables. He was an avid reader and historian, sharing his knowledge with family and friends. He was particularly fond of old band music. He loved and cared for animals. He and his first wife enjoyed their many trips to the shores of the New Hampshire and Maine coasts.

He was predeceased by his first wife of sixty two years, Grace (Barrett) Ryan who died in 2001 and his second wife of nine months, Margaret (Berry) Ryan who died in 2006.

His family includes two daughters, Katherine A. Ryan of Wells, ME and Susan R. Knowlton of Northfield; stepdaughter Ann Courser of Contoocook; three sons, Lawrence B. Ryan of Kennebunk, ME, Michael L. Ryan of Great Barrington, MA and Stephen L. Ryan of Franklin; stepsons Thomas Amabile of Colorado and Richard Day of Meredith; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews

Calling hours will be Saturday from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton, NH. A celebration of Mr. Ryan’s life will follow at 2:00. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Tilton.
