John William “Jack” Griffin, age 88, of Methuen, Massachusetts, and Laconia, passed away peacefully on Oct. 5, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Jack was born in Lawrence in 1936, to the late John M. and Elizabeth J. (Brown) Griffin. Jack lived a life marked by service, laughter, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear. After graduating high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he was stationed aboard the submarine USS Cobbler. His time in the Navy instilled in him a deep sense of duty and camaraderie that would carry through the rest of his life.
Following his military service, Jack pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. He served the City of Methuen with honor and distinction, earning the respect and affection of his fellow firefighters and the community he protected. Even in retirement, Jack remained close to his fire department family, cherishing the bonds forged through years of shared sacrifice and service.
Jack was the loving father of Maureen Nasser and her husband Charlie of Methuen, and Colleen O’Riordan of Gilford. He was the cherished grandfather of Kevin, Trey, Ravenne, Shannon and her husband Keion, and the adored great-grandfather of Lyla.
In addition to his parents, Jack is predeceased by his daughter Cathleen Markert.
His family and friends were the center of his world, and he was the heart of every gathering, energetic, social, and always the life of the party. A devout Catholic, Jack lived his faith through kindness, generosity, and a deep love for others. He had a sweet tooth and a sweet soul, a loyal New England Patriots fan, and a passionate boater who found joy on the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee. After retiring, he continued to serve as a part-time Marine Patrol officer, combining his love of the lake with his commitment to public safety.
Jack loved dogs, good conversation, and making people laugh. His presence lit up every room, and his legacy will live on in the stories, smiles, and memories shared by those who knew him.
