TILTON — David “Dave” McKay, 88, passed away on May 21, 2026, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton. Dave was born on April 11, 1938, in Rockport, Massachusetts, the son of the late Eunice Wheeler McKay Lane and Joseph Russell McKay, and stepson of the late Sheldon Lane.

Dave is survived by his wife of 17 years, Dorothy Knowlton; his son, James McKay; his sisters, Norma Broady McKay and Catherine “Kitty” McKay O’Leary; and his brother-in-law, Edward O’Leary. He is also survived by two grandsons and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife of more than 30 years, Beverly Lamontagne McKay; his eldest son, Michael McKay; his only daughter, Sharon McKay; and his stepsisters, Barbara Silva and Marcia Hurley.

David was educated in the schools of Merrimack, and later attended the University of New Hampshire for four years. Dave proudly served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1965. Following his honorable discharge, he completed his studies at the University of New Hampshire, earning a master’s degree in forestry, which was a field that reflected his lifelong love of nature and the outdoors during a forestry career spanning more than 40 years.

In retirement, Dave and Dorothy enjoyed gardening, hiking, kayaking, and traveling throughout the United States and abroad. He was also an avid walker, covering miles each day. Dave was a kind and caring man who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Hampshire Veterans Home, 139 Winter St., Tilton, NH 03276, or Dementia Society of America, P.O. Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901, in Dave’s memory.
