BRIDGEWATER — Charles H. “Chuck” Hemphill passed away on Sept. 4, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.
He was born on July 25, 1931, in Concord, to Charles and Augusta (Merrill) Hemphill Sr., and was raised by Charles and Alice (Mylon) Hemphill Sr.
Following graduation from high school, Chuck earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Plymouth Teachers College. He went on to teach in the late 1960s at the Bristol Elementary School. He then went to work at Speare Memorial Hospital working in many different positions in his 50 years with the hospital. At the time he retired he was working in materials management and often did courier work as well.
Chuck was a founding member of the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department. He loved to climb mountains and began a quest to climb all of the New Hampshire 4,000’ mountains before it became a goal for the general public. When he was at home, Chuck spent much time working on home projects, tinkering on equipment, and collecting his loved stuffed animals.
He is survived by his wife Helen (Smialek) Hemphill of Bridgewater; four daughters, Susan Frank of Columbus, Ohio, Diane Whittaker of Alstead, Alice Mickewicz of Bristol, and Linda Ingham of Bridgwater; a son, John Hemphill of Ravenna, Ohio; grandchildren, Kim, Drew, Katy, Zachery, Adam, Samantha, Ryan, James, Rachel and Matthew. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Kathy Dalrymple.
There are no calling hours.
A celebration of life is being planned for a later date and will be announced when those arrangements are complete.
