After more than 5 years of planning and fundraising, the first section of the WOW (Winnisquam-Opechee-Winnipesaukee) Recreation Trail is planned for construction to begin in early spring of 2008. This section, Phase I, is part of a planned 10-mile recreation/bicycle path that will run through Laconia connecting with neighboring communities, and ultimately connecting with trails across the state.

The first section of trail will run from the back of the Laconia Library on North Main Street to Elm Street in Lakeport. The trail will be a paved, 10 foot wide path with much of the trail running within the railroad corridor. The trail will come off the railroad corridor at Messer Street in order to cross over the Winnipesaukee River. The Messer Street sidewalk will be upgraded as part of this project.

The final design from HEB Engineering is near completion, and the various permits necessary for this project are expected to be completed in time for the spring construction.

“We are excited to be so close to the beginning of this project,” said Diane Hanley, Chairperson of the WOW Board. “This project has been made possible by the generosity of the residents, business community and our city leaders…and everyone is looking forward to having this trail in our community for generations to come”.

In addition to beginning the Phase I construction this coming spring, WOW organizers are planning for Phase II, which will continue from North Main Street to the Belmont town line, connecting to the planned Belmont trail. Construction for Phase II could begin as early as 2009.
