LACONIA — The New Hampshire State Police, in cooperation with the Laconia Police Department and the Belknap County Sheriff’s Office applied for, and were granted, a Superior Court petition to conduct a “Sobriety Checkpoint” in the Laconia during the weekend of August 20-21-22. The location of the checkpoint, where all motorists will be pulled over through a defined period of time, will not be disclosed in advance.

The program, approved by the NH Highway Safety Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, provides federal highway safety funds to support this checkpoint.

The purpose of the “Sobriety Checkpoint” is to deter, detect and apprehend the impaired driver. Troop E Commander Lieutenant William Magee, Laconia Police Chief Michael Moyer, and Belknap County Sheriff Craig Wiggin have taken an aggressive stance to prevent persons from driving when intoxicated. New Hampshire has some of the most aggressive laws in the country to fight the intoxicated driver and the law enforcement community will use those tools to their full extent.
