ASHLAND — In memory of Mary Ruell's endless devotion to community service in the Town of Ashland, the Fourth of July Committee created the "Mary Ruell Citizen of Ashland" Award as an annual honor for an individual or group who has made a noteworthy contribution to Ashland.

Marion Merrill, who is 99 years young, was presented with the first award Saturday, Aug. 2. Mrs. Merrill's many years of involvement in Ashland's community made her deserving of special recognition for her outstanding civic pride and commitment to the betterment of the town.

Until recently, Mrs. Merrill was a longtime resident of Ashland, having owned a successful real estate and insurance business in town. She was actively involved in the Chamber of Commerce and served as the Town Clerk from 1958 -1980.

Mrs. Merrill was active in many area organizations, including the Community Breakfasts; Rebekahs; Ashland Woman's Club; Squam River Covered Bridge Committee; Beautification Committee; Memorial Park Committee; Ashland Historical Society and First Free Will Baptist Church.
