GILFORD — Owen Day was presented the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor on Saturday, April 15, which was held at the Belknap County Sportsmen's Association.
Day is a junior at Gilford High School. He is a member of Troop 243 in Gilford, currently serving the troop as a junior assistant scoutmaster. He started in Scouting in 2010 as a Cub Scout in Pack 253, and later a Boy Scout in Troop 272, both located in Nashua. He transferred to Troop 243 in the fall of 2013 after moving to Gilford with his family.
In addition to advancing through the seven ranks of Scouting, Day has earned 34 merit badges. The two most recent were earned this winter; Welding and Wilderness Survival.
His Eagle Scout service project was the design and construction of a sports bag rack at the Gilford Middle School track. Owen appeared before the SAU 73 school board last fall to pitch his plan, and was granted permission to construct the rack on school grounds. The rack provides 40 hangers for sports bags and equipment to be stored up off the ground and underneath a metal roof, out of the elements. Barton Lumber and Forever Metal Roofing Company donated most of the materials used in construction of the rack. The project was built over four work days, using over 200 man-hours.
In addition to Scouts, Day plays trumpet in the Gilford HighSchool band and the Gilford Community Band. He has also been a member of the high school golf team, the track team, and most recently the robotics club.
