TUFTONBORO — For families of a child with a chronic health condition, the summer months can present some unique challenges in regards to summer camps and programs. Many camps do not have the staffing capacity or program structure that supports the needs of children with a chronic medical condition. Zebra Crossings aims to provide that level of support for kids and families. Our medical staff provide support and administer medication which gives parents the much needed peace of mind and respite. Our program model considers the various needs of our participants and provides a fun and engaging environment for kids to thrive in and to gain a sense of independence.

Last year Zebra Crossings, supported by New Hampshire's Hospital for Children, successfully launched Camp Spinnaker, a residential asthma camp for kids ages 8 to 12 in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Campers from New Hampshire, Massachussetts and Vermont joined for an empowering experience. Campers discovered what they are capable achieving when their asthma is well controlled.

A 2013 camper parent reflected on the impact of the camp on her son:

"This is such a great experience for children with asthma. Being surrounded by kids in the same situation takes away the shyness and hesitation in learning more about what "having asthma" means. For my child, he came home owning it rather than it owning him."

This summer we welcome more kids to join us the week of August 17-22, at Camp Merrowvista in Center Tuftonboro. In addition to usual summer camp activities such as swimming, archery, rock climbing and crafts, we integrate an extensive but fun asthma education program into the week. The camp fee is $400 per camper.

Zebra Crossings' mission is to enrich the lives of children with a chronic health condition, including those at risk of developing chronic health condition by fostering greater self-confidence, a sense of independence and a desire to realize their full potential through fun and engaging enrichment programs that build a strong and caring community support network for families.

Zebra Crossings ability to grow and provide more opportunities for children with a chronic medical condition is as a result of community support from our sponsors and supporters. For all programs Zebra Crossings provides need based scholarship support.
