Water Yoga, Welding, Quilting In “8" Weeks, Spanish, Machine Tool Basics, Tai Chi, French, Water Color Painting, Ball Room Dancing, Chair Caning, Dog Obedience and Computer classes are just a few of the courses offered for the Fall Semester 2007. You can prepare for the SAT or the GED Exams, attend Laconia Academy to get your high school diploma, or enjoy an evening Wine Tasting Seminar with Hors D’oeuvres. Take a “FREE” seminar on learning how to make smart investments in stocks, bonds and mutual funds and learn how to make informed decisions in planning for retirement. Enroll in a Reiki, Meditation or a Pilates 101 class. Take the stress out of your life with Tai Chi and Yoga classes for relaxation and pain reduction. Be adventurous and try your hand at Knitting for Beginners, or Fly Tying. Learn Sign Language or how to speak Italian, German, Spanish or try your hand at Oil Painting or Drawing, How to Design your own Wedding Cake, or learn how to make Simply Sweet and Fancy Deserts. Take a class in Welding Basics: Arc, Gas & Tig or sign up for a Mig Welding Class. Machine Tool classes are offered in order to learn basic manual machine shop skills using mills and lathes. Learn to speak, read, write and understand English for those individuals living in the Lakes Region from a foreign country. The classes are FREE and meet Tuesday & Thursday from 6:30-9:00 p.m. for ten (10) weeks. Learn to speak and understand English in a friendly environment. A high school diploma enables one to get a job promotion, enlist in the military service, get a pay increase, and improve one’s sense of self-esteem and personal self-worth. Laconia Academy, the adult high school diploma program, enables anyone wishing to return to the classroom at night, the chance to get a high school diploma. Classes run from 6:00-9:00 p.m., Monday - Thursday nights. A high school transcript from the last school attended is necessary. Credit is given for those courses successfully passed. Life experience credits are also given for work and military experience. Laconia Academy is also approved for anyone eligible for Veterans’ Benefits.
Laconia Academy also enables In-School Youths, lacking the proper number of credits to graduate in June 2008 with their class. Permission is needed from the principal of the sending school in order for an in-school youth to enroll at Laconia Academy. Credits for courses successfully passed at Laconia Academy will be transferred back to the day program prior to the June graduation date.
Laconia Savings Bank, in conjunction with their Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) Plan, is providing limited Scholarship help to residents of Laconia, Gilford, Meredith, Moultonborough and Center Harbor, wishing to attend Laconia Academy and get a High School Diploma or a GED Certificate. Financial need must be demonstrated.
Statistics show that one out of seven adults in New Hampshire does not have a high school diploma. You are not alone. 1,041 Lakes Region adults have earned their high school diploma through Laconia Academy. Everyone knows how important an education is. Do something special and treat yourself to a more successful career by earning a high school diploma. Adult Basic Education Classes help adults to improve their basic math and reading skills in a classroom setting. The Adult Math and Reading Clinics emphasize basic math competencies and reading comprehension skills. It helps adults feel more competent in being able to meet their personal, vocational and family obligations by improving their life coping survival skills. Classes are FREE and meet from 6:30-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Limited transportation is also available.
The High School Equivalency (GED) Preparation classes are due to start on Monday, September 24 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 25 and Thursday, September 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for a 10-week semester. The GED Exam offers adults a quick way to gain a secondary completion. It is a GED Certificate and not a diploma. A GED Certificate enables you to attend a Vocational-Technical College. The GED Exam is given by appointment only. You must be 18 years of age or older and out of school to be eligible to take the GED Exam. Anyone under the age eighteen must obtain a waiver from the NH Department of Education in order to be able to take the GED Exam. The Adult Tutorial Program for Belknap County helps non-reading adults learn to read, write, and do simple mathematical computations needed for everyday life. The Tutorial Program also needs tutors who are willing to help people learn to speak, read and write English as a second language. Volunteer tutors are needed to work on a one-to-one basis with adult students who cannot read and need to learn to speak English. There is no pressure in the Tutorial Program. There are no grades involved. The Tutorial Program is always on the lookout for adults who need help with reading or adults who are unable to read. Perhaps you know of a relative, friend, or someone you work with who can’t read or needs to speak English. Call 524-5712 and make a referral. All information is strictly confidential. In 2007 there is no need for people to be embarrassed because they can’t read or speak English. Help is only a phone call away.
